What it is

Surplus fiber is a market that runs on memory. A contractor finishing a build has reels in the yard and no reliable way to know what they are worth; the people buying them have every reason not to say. The result is a market where price discovery happens one phone call at a time, and the person holding the material is usually the one with the least information.

The index exists to fix the asymmetry on the seller's side. Each month we publish what surplus cable is listed at by fiber count, so the person holding a reel knows the market before anyone quotes them. If the numbers make a case for calling someone else, that is a fair outcome.

What it measures — honestly

These are asking prices, not transaction prices. The first edition draws on a single storefront panel with heavy brand concentration. All of that is stated on the methodology page, including what we are doing about it.
